The Great Migration in Africa

No. The Migration happens every year, but specific sightings are never guaranteed. River crossings depend on rainfall, river levels and herd behaviour.

They are the most famous part, but not necessarily the most meaningful. Calving season, predator movement, quieter periods in the Western Corridor and grazing on the Mara plains can be just as rewarding.

Some areas can be crowded, especially public crossing points in the Maasai Mara during peak season. Private conservancies and carefully chosen Serengeti camps can help reduce vehicle density.

There is no single best month. January to March is best for calving in the southern Serengeti. June to July can bring Grumeti River crossings. July to October is the main Mara River crossing season. November and December are quieter months as the herds begin moving south again.

Tanzania is best for understanding the wider annual cycle, especially calving season and the Serengeti’s different migration zones. Kenya is strongest for the Mara River crossing period and conservancy-based safaris. The right choice depends on your dates, budget and how important lower vehicle density is to your safari experience.

For peak Migration months, especially July to October, planning well in advance is strongly recommended. The best-positioned camps have limited space, and the most thoughtful itineraries depend on availability in the right regions.

Choose camps for position, guiding and conservation value, not comfort alone. Seasonal Serengeti camps and Grumeti Game Reserve lodges place you closer to key Migration routes, while private conservancy camps near the Maasai Mara can offer lower vehicle density and a more considered safari experience. 

A minimum of seven nights is sensible for a Migration-focused safari. This gives you enough time to settle into the landscape, allow for unpredictable herd movement and avoid treating the experience like a single scheduled event.
If you’re combining two regions, 10 to 14 nights works better. This might include the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro during calving season, or the northern Serengeti and a Maasai Mara conservancy during the river-crossing months.
Fly-in safaris are often worth considering because they reduce long road transfers and give you more time in the areas that matter.

The cost of a Great Migration safari depends on season, camp style, location and inclusions. Peak river-crossing months from July to October sit at the higher end, especially in well-positioned camps and private conservancies.
